Biography

A talented wrestler at Coronado High in El Paso, TX, Schoonover began training in jiu-jitsu, judo, submission grappling and Muay-Thai at 17. Following graduation, he enlisted in the Army and began serving his country in September 2004. His stint included two years in Germany, one year each at Fort Hood in Texas, and Fort Irwin in San Bernardino County, CA. The former Air Defense Artillery specialist is now on active reserve. Following his military release, Schoonover turned professional in 2008 and has a perfect 10-0 record. A well-rounded fighter, his victories include five by TKO and five by submission.

Despite his age, Schoonover is one of the more experienced mixed martial artists on the show having trained for nearly seven years. An aspiring History teacher, Schoonover temporarily dropped out of Central Texas College in Killeen in order to compete on the show.

Training: Challenging, and getting my ass kicked, but productive

When and why did you start training for fighting? Seven years ago. I was always fighting, and my uncle challenged me to start training to really prove how tough I was. I had my first fight after my first week of training.

What does it mean for you to fight in the UFC? It’s a great opportunity to test my skills and learn more about the sport.

Did you go to college and if so what degree did you earn? Currently attending college at Central Texas College in Killeen, Texas, where I'm working on a history degree
